Job Description

We are seeking a proven, enthusiastic, and strategic salesperson to grow sales in all existing and new trade accounts within the Pacific Northwest territory. Account base includes regional wholesalers, museums, college and university bookstores and trade independent bookstores. Strong candidates will have proven success as sales representatives in the book and gift markets, meeting significant sales revenue targets. An orientation towards client relationships, account management and collaborative work is required. This is a traveling (30% local, 20% overnight) role.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Sell to Trade accounts in territory; meet and exceed sales goals:

  • Present frontlist to entire account base each season, primarily in person, and also including some Edelweiss and phone sales appointments.
  • Proactively sell backlist throughout the year including leveraging seasonal promotions.
  • Create and execute merchandising plans with accounts to maximize sales of specific titles, formats, and series.
  • Be the expert and advocate for this territory in-house.
  • Translate Chronicle Books in-house sales initiatives into quantifiable results in territory.
  • Identify areas of growth and opportunity in the account base.
  • Attend sales conferences, launch meetings, regional trade shows, and occasionally Winter Institute and Children’s Institute.
  • Create and maintain updated Edelweiss markups for accounts every season.

Consistent and ongoing communication around territory performance:

  • Carefully observe and strategize around rises and falls at key accounts; identify causes and work to maintain and build sales in territory.
  • Weekly calls and reports communicating territory highlights, forecasts, and updates.
  • Quarterly territory sales analysis.
  • Periodic sell through information.

Work collaboratively with Marketing and Publicity Departments:

  • Manage territory co-op budget. Examine individual customers to evaluate the success of in-store events and/or co-op.
  • Collaborate in planning and execution of author events and tours.
  • Sell in and creation of specials, marketing plans, partnerships, and displays.

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of prior publishing sales experience required.
  • Retail Bookstore and/or Museum experience a plus.
  • Driven, results-oriented, self- motivated orientation with the proven ability to work independently.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Ability to travel overnight (approximately 30% local, 20% overnight).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office a must: Excel, Edelweiss, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, as well as Salesforce.
  • Must own a car and maintain an expected  level of coverage
  • Position will be based in Seattle, WA or Portland, OR.

Hiring Salary Range: $68,000 - $78,200. This range represents the anticipated low and high end of the expected annual salary for this position and will be determined by factors including but not limited to an applicant’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, and abilities, and geographic location as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. This position is also eligible for our profit share plan and participates in a sales bonus plan.
