Summary Objective

The purpose of this position is to coordinate the city's economic development activities, assisting the Economic Development Director with initiatives related to business attraction, business retention, marketing, development research and other tasks to enhance the City’s economic and employment base.

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities to director and executive level administration through periodic meetings and reports.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban development, Economic Development, Finance, Real Estate, Economics or related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in economic development, market analysis, real estate or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for economic growth programs and in support of the city's economic development strategy.
  • Conducts research; tracks business trends, development patterns, and real estate activity; compiles statistical and demographic information; analyzes findings and makes recommendations.
  • Assists in the preparation of marketing and promotional materials; prepares reports, letters; updates economic development website; and other written communication; delivers presentations.
  • Prospects for redevelopment opportunities throughout the city and assists with real property acquisitions and dispositions.
  • Markets and assists applicants with incentive program applications and performs technical review of financial terms.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with the business community and community partners to foster economic growth and address concerns.
  • Serves as point-of-contact for information and expansion-related requests from existing employers; provides technical assistance to businesses applying for federal, state, or regional incentive programs to aid in expansion and growth.
  • Assists interested businesses and target industries in identifying potential sites, securing city approvals, identifying financing incentive opportunities, providing competitive market data.
  • Coordinates economic development efforts with other city departments, divisions, outside agencies, and service providers.
  • Meets with public groups, clubs, organizations, and agencies to explain and promote programs that encourage economic growth.
  • Stays abreast of new trends in the field of economic development.
  • Processes and coordinates the film permitting process.
  • Performs related work as assigned

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Certified Economic Developer or AICP certifications is preferred.
