Job Description

Job Summary The Director of Finance (DOF) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the accounting and finance operations in accordance with the organization’s mission and strategies. The DOF supports the CFO and works closely with the FP&A Business Partner to develop and implement financial policies and strategies that impact the financial strength of the organization and properties. The DOF leads and manages the accounting team to enforce internal controls and financial reporting systems for timely and accurate production of financial reports. The DOF provides leadership to the accounting team in areas of accounts receivables, accounts payable, payroll, treasury management, grants and contracts revenue management, cost allocations, development cost accounting, general ledger oversight, and audit and tax functions. The DOF works closely with the FP&A Business Partner and asset management team to appraise operating results and monitor the financial condition of the organization.

Hours: Onsite, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Salary: $159,600 - $168,000; Comprehensive benefits

​Job Responsibilities  

  • Work with the CFO and other Senior Management staff to monitor the financial condition of the organization.
  • Collaborate with CFO and the FP&A Business partner to
    • Develop, analyze, and interpret accounting information to appraise financial operating results.
    • Lead annual budget design and revisions and monitor budget compliance.
  • Support the CFO to
    • provide financial and other management report, as needed, to Executive Director, Executive and Management Team, Board of Directors, and Board Committees.
    • Develop and implement investment strategies with Executive Team and Board Committees.
  • Serve as the subject-matter expert in US GAAP, Taxes and other LIHTC compliance regulations to respond to fiscal-related questions and requests as needed.
  • Assure organizational compliance with federal, state and local laws/regulations that are fiscally related.
  • Participate actively in all short-range and long-range financial planning and management strategies and monitor effectiveness.
  • Monitor organization cash flow and management of cash funds.
  • Work with Assistant Controllers and Accounting Managers to oversee Fiscal operating functions for financial reporting, general accounting, real estate development accounting, property accounting, internal auditing, cost accounting, payroll processing, contracts budgetary, treasury management and internal controls.
  • Provide staff training as needed in budget preparation, budget analysis and overall fiscal management.
  • Work with staff to design and implement fiscal-related policies and procedures.
  •  Ensure proper internal controls system in place and are maintained to allow work efficiencies within Fiscal and across departments.
  • Oversee timely and accurate financial reporting to internal department leads, lenders, funders, and any financial institutions.
  • Act as main liaison with auditing firm to ensure timely completion of audits and tax returns for parent organization and all affiliates.
  • Support the goal of increasing efficiency levels throughout the organization through optimal use of technology and adoption of new technological tools.
  • Represent organization with government agencies and financial institutions, as appropriate.
  • Develop, monitor, and maintain the Accounting Department’s budget.
  • Lead the development of the Department’s annual Work Program
  • Lead regular Department meetings for Accounting Team with support of Department Assistants
  • Supervise, train, and oversee the work of directly reporting staff.
  • Prepare and conduct performance reviews for staff supervised.
  • Develop work goals for staff supervised.
  • Responsible for the recruitment, interview, and selection for directly supervised position vacancies.
  • Ensure staff knows and follows safe work practices and policies.

What You Bring :​  

  • Highly detailed-oriented and well-organized
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with emphasis on strong financial presentation skills · Knowledge of computer accounting systems and strong spreadsheets skills
  • Thorough understanding of nonprofit and real estate financial accounting and management
  • Knowledge of budgeting and financial reporting procedures
  • Ability to develop and implement sound financial and internal control systems and processes
  • Ability to analyze and handle complex operational and financial situations
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance group
  • Ability to mentor and lead staff and to foster a team environment
  • Ability to handle complex multiple tasks and meet deadlines

Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications):  

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field, or equivalent experience
  •  Seven (7) years of progressive experience related to financial functions
  • Five (5) years supervisory experience in Accounting/Finance Department
  • Experience in and/or knowledge of non-profit and/or real estate/construction accounting
  • Computer experience in word-processing, spreadsheets, and computerized accounting software

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in business administration, Accounting or Tax
  • Licensed CPA
  • Experience with LIHTC and affordable housing industry
  • Experience with MIP Abila and Yardi software
