Job Description

Associate or Full Specialist

This Specialist's effort will be distributed evenly between the two labs, focusing on collaborative projects and with an overlapping job description along with jointly developed expectations and mentorship.

Our collaborative research focuses on understanding how maladaptive responses among cell types in adipose tissues and the liver can lead to inflammation and fibrosis, particularly in the context of obesity. These responses and the mechanisms underlying them are crucial to explaining the link between obesity, insulin resistance, and diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and fatty liver disease. Our studies employ several approaches, including mouse models of human disease, human and mouse primary cell cultures, human and mouse genomic techniques, and a variety of whole-body, tissue-level, and cellular assays use to probe metabolism, inflammation, and fibrosis.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Direct hands-on laboratory experience with approaches including molecular biology (RNA and protein-based assays), mouse models, specimen collection and tissue analyses, histology, blood processing.
  • Documented record of professional achievement in the form of impactful publications.
  • Individuals must also be familiar with basic metabolic and immunological principles as well as experimental techniques including immunofluorescence imaging, high parameter flow cytometry, molecular, biochemical, and functional assays, as well as methods to assess systemic and tissue/cellular metabolism.
  • Expectations also include good oral/written communication skills, creative problem-solving knowhow, an outstanding sense of teamwork and scientific collaboration, and the ability to integrate detailed analyses into a larger disease-oriented context.
  • Problem-solver with a positive attitude, who is capable of designing and performing experiments, critically analyzing data, and assuming primary responsibility for communicating scientific results, all with a high level of independence and an ability to benefit from focused feedback.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Transcriptomic and bioinformatic skills to address key questions within the scope of the proposed work are a plus.
  • Applicants who have significant experience with multi-channel flow cytometry or FACS, experience with advanced microscopy and image analysis or experience with in vivo imaging or localization studies are strongly encouraged to apply.

Additionally, the specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-today lab operations, performing general lab duties, and acting as a supportive and positive lab citizen as well as a potential mentor to junior lab members including research assistants and both undergraduate and graduate students.
