The YMCA of Greater Nashua seeks an experienced Assistant Aquatics Director to elevate and unify our aquatics operations.  This is a pivotal role for an inspiring leader who thrives on developing people, enhancing safety, and creating welcoming, high-quality aquatics experiences that help all ages learn, grow, and belong.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Assistant Aquatics Director supports the work of the Y by helping create a high-quality, member-centered aquatics environment. This role provides balanced leadership in both daily operations and program quality while fostering an inclusive, safe, and engaging experience for staff and members. This role follows a Tuesday-Saturday schedule to support weekend aquatics operations and member needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Operations & Safety Oversight

  • Support daily aquatics operations, ensuring adherence to all New Hampshire state, local, and YMCA safety regulations
  • Monitor pool operations, maintain accurate chemical and maintenance logs, and ensure compliance-based documentation
  • Ensure appropriate lifeguard staffing and maintain vigilant supervision standards
  • Conduct safety drills, audits, and ongoing training with the Aquatics Directors

Program Leadership & Member Experience

  • Support high-quality swim lesson programming, including lesson consistency, instructor coaching, and participant experience
  • Assist with program scheduling, ensuring balanced allocation of pool space for programs and member use
  • Support department efforts to grow swim lesson enrollment and strengthen member engagement

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and evaluating lifeguards and swim instructors
  • Promote an inclusive and supportive work environment rooted in YMCA values
  • Support employee development through coaching, training, and feedback
  • Model strong communication and relationship-building skills with staff, members, and volunteers

 Administrative & Organizational Support

  • Assist the Aquatics Director with departmental planning and operational projects
  • Provide flexible direct service hours (lifeguarding or teaching) based on program needs
  • Support annual campaign efforts and Y-wide initiatives
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Aquatics Director

 QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience preferred.
  2. One to two years related experience; for example, supervisor or head lifeguard.
  3. Must be 21 years or older.
  4. Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross Lifeguard, LGI preferred.
  5. Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor preferred along swim instruction experience.
  6. Current CPO or POOL (Pool Operation On Location) required within the first 90 days of hire.
  7. Ability to lead others and to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  8. Ability to make sound judgement and decision making.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively- verbally and in written form—with members, staff and volunteers

 WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to act and move with quickness and agility.
  • Be able to lift at least forty pounds.
  • Correctly perform and describe aquatic skills for demonstration purposes.
  • Carry equipment (forty pounds or less) from supply closet to the pool deck and return.
  • Swim a minimum of 300 yards.
  • Tread water for up to 10 minutes.
  • Lift and support an adult out of the water.
  • Swim to the bottom of the pool retrieve and remove an adult victim.
  • Stand and walk around the pool for a minimum of two continuous hours.
