Area Controller Location Madison, WI (Capitol area) : Canopy Services is hiring a Area Controller for a full-time position in Madison Wisconsin. The Area Controller is responsible for the integrity of financial reporting for multiple subsidiary companies located in southeast WI and MI. This includes journal entries, subsidiary ledgers, supporting schedules, monthly balance sheet and account analysis; leads and oversees all accounting activities; reviews account payable and accounts receivable; coordinates and directs budgeting and financial forecasting; monitors inventory levels; assists with service pricing policies; sales and use tax filings.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Manages the Larson-Keeney Controller who has 3 direct reports between Larson and Keeney.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Leads month-end closing process for all subsidiary companies including pre-closing review with Larson-Keeney Controller and presents monthly financial results to Business Unit leadership as well as Canopy's CEO and CFO.
- Serve as a strategic business partner to the founders of Larson and Keeney as well as the WI/MI Group General Manager.
- Ensures adherence to internal controls, accounting policies/procedures and GAAP including the proper timing/recognition of revenue and expenses
- Leads the preparation of business activity reports, financial forecasts and annual budgets.
- Analyzes inventory levels and ensures accuracy of inventory counts and valuation.
- Performs analysis of job-level revenue and costs to ensure that profitability goals are met.
- Performs fixed asset accounting including capitalization decisions, asset life determination, depreciation calculations and subledger maintenance.
- Reviews bank reconciliations and submits required information for compilation of weekly Cash-Debt Report by Canopy's CFO.
- Reviews accounts payable and accounts receivable agings.
- Identify and resolve vendor pricing discrepancies.
- Lead onsite annual audit field work and respond to audit requests.
SKILLS: - Experience with Sage Intacct accounting software, or similar cloud-based GL systems.
- Experience with systems migrations from QuickBooks to cloud-based accounting software.
- Experience with QB desktop/online platform preferred.
- Experience with transition from Cash to Accrual based accounting.
- Advanced knowledge of Excel.
- Previous supervisory experience.
- High level of accuracy, attention to detail.
- Organizational & multi-tasking skills.
- Excellent written & verbal communicator w/listening skills.
- Good “player/coach” and developer of people.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI): - The timeliness and accuracy of daily/weekly/monthly reporting.
- The level of support and satisfaction of WI/MI Group leadership as well as Canopy's CFO.
- The creation of sound and accurate financial reporting tools for the business.
- The cultivation of Interpersonal relationships, building and maintaining strong lines of communication and teamwork across all levels of the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
- Certified Public Accountant designation required.
- 6+ years of related experience required, 3+ years in a management position.
- Independent decision maker, self-motivated and organized.
- Capable of self-checking accuracy of work as well as reviewing the work of others.
