The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Computational Aerospace Engineer/ Scientist to help figure out the plasma physics involved for hypersonic reentry. In this position you will support the Air Force Research Laboratory’s growing team of modeling/simulation and experimentation professionals who are developing the next generation of M&S tools for advanced reentry vehicle design and effects.
Key Responsibilities - Perform numerical modeling and simulation of extreme dynamic environments using methods such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA), hydrocodes, etc. using massively multi-parallelized High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Unix-based environments
- Investigate and analyze complex phenomena such as fluid-structure interactions (FSI), ablation in re-entry environments, plasma physics, hydrodynamics, thermomechanical and thermostructural phenomena at static and dynamic conditions, thermochemical analyses and kinetic modeling, etc.
- Develop methodologies for large scale, fast-running simulations and use high fidelity physics-based models to inform fast-running calculations and design methodologies
- Develop numerical methods and toolsets, analyze and post-process large scale simulation data, perform statistical modeling and uncertainty quantification, develop and inform new models from complex experimental data
- Prepare and deliver computational results and analysis via written and verbal briefings to different audiences, including senior leadership and outside stakeholders as well as prepare results for peer-reviewed publication and presentation in conferences or other forums.
- Coordinate with AFRL government Scientists and Engineers to determine near-and far-term M&S priorities
Required Qualifications: - BS Degree in a related field + 2 years in Aerospace Engineering or equivalent STEM field
- Experience with software applications and tools such as US3D, LAURA, FUN3D, Abaqus, MATLAB (with applicable toolboxes such as FEATool), Fortran, and C/C++
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to present clearly and succinctly to customers
- Must be able to support travel up to 25%
- Must be a US citizen and be able to obtain a security clearance
Preferred Qualifications - Knowledge about the US strategic weapons enterprise
- Knowledge about hypersonic reentry vehicles
- Experience with space hardware development and testing
- Experience working with both Scientists and Engineers
