Communications Intern (Fall 2025)

ABOUT THE INNOCENCE PROJECT

The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. Our work is guided by science and grounded in anti-racism. Since our inception, the Innocence Project has used DNA and other scientific advancements to prove wrongful conviction. To date, we have helped to free or exonerate more than 200 people who, collectively, spent more than 3,600 years behind bars. Our efforts have led to the passage of more than 200 transformative state laws and federal reforms. ABOUT THE POSITION

The Communications Intern provides support to the communications team, working closely with the Director, Editorial to craft compelling content that amplifies the organization’s advocacy, legislative, and programmatic work. The intern will also assist in identifying impactful opportunities to connect with various audiences. 

The primary focuses of this internship are to produce quality content for the Innocence Project’s internal and external channels and to teach best practices in nonprofit communications.

This position will be a 10-week paid internship with a minimum requirement of 16 hours per week beginning in September 2025. The timeframe and schedule are flexible. The internship will be hybrid with at least one day per week in the office.

The ideal candidate for this internship is a driven, intellectually curious, and empathetic self-starter who works well in collaborative environments and has a strong interest in the Innocence Project’s mission and work. 

Requirements

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

• Producing content for the Innocence Project’s website and related platforms
• Ensuring that internal and external communications are aligned with the organization’s work and mission
• Strategizing ways to better engage internal and external audiences 
• Proofreading pieces for style and grammar consistency

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Undergraduate or graduate student with a concentration in English, communications, journalism, media relations, or a related field
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills
• Attention to detail along with a commitment to quality and proofreading 
• Basic competency in G Suite 
• Interest in nonprofit communications
• Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY

$19 per hour for undergraduate students and $21 per hour for postgraduate students
